I am Professor of Practical Philosophy at the University of Helsinki. Until the end of 2017, I was an Academy of Finland Research Fellow at Tampere, and before that I worked at Trinity College Dublin. I work mostly on ethics and metaethics. I also like to teach political philosophy, and have recently started to examine philosophical questions regarding artificial intelligence. The best way to reach me is by email at a.kauppinen (at) gmail.com. In the last several years, I have written a fair amount about well-being, or what is ultimately in our self-interest. The view I've been developing emphasizes the importance of meaningful agency over time both in itself and for the affective condition of happiness. I've also worked quite a bit on the various roles of emotions and attitudes in morality. In addition, I'm interested in the nature of reasons and rationality, though I don't think they're as fundamental for morality and normativity as many others do.
